Appropriate Play

Plot Overview

At the heart of “Appropriate” lies the tangled web of the Lafayette family. As the saying goes, “you can’t choose your family,” and the Lafayettes, with their myriad of quirks and secrets, are a testament to that. When the patriarch of the family passes away, the remaining members converge upon their ancestral home, expecting a simple process of sorting through memories and mementos. But, as is often the case in life, things are never as straightforward as they seem. Hidden amidst the clutter and remnants of yesteryears, they stumble upon a relic that’s as dark as it’s disturbing. This discovery sends shockwaves through the family, bringing to light old wounds, unresolved issues, and questions that might be better left unanswered. What is this sinister find? And what does it reveal about the Lafayette legacy?

The setting of the play, a crumbling Arkansas plantation, is a character in its own right. It’s not just a backdrop; it’s a silent witness to generations of history, love, conflict, and secrets. This once-grand estate, now succumbing to the ravages of time, mirrors the fractured dynamics of the Lafayette family. The creaky floorboards, the walls echoing with whispers of the past, and the overgrown gardens—all paint a vivid picture of decay, both physical and emotional. It’s here, amidst the shadows of the past, that the Lafayette family confronts its truths, however unsettling they might be.

Themes and Symbolism

At its core, “Appropriate” is a masterclass in the unveiling of hidden truths, and none are more haunting than family secrets. The Lafayette family’s descent into the depths of their shared history is a stark reminder that skeletons, when locked away in closets, have a way of rattling their bones. Jacobs-Jenkins, in his inimitable style, uses the family’s revelations to explore the universality of secrets—how they shape us, haunt us, and ultimately define us. The question then arises: can one ever truly escape the shadows of the past?

Yet, it’s not just familial ties that are under the microscope. With a deft hand, the play delves into the murky waters of racial undertones in America. Through the lens of the Lafayette family’s legacy, “Appropriate” offers a raw, unfiltered look at America’s racial history—a history often glossed over or conveniently forgotten. It challenges the audience to confront uncomfortable truths and grapple with the question: how does one reconcile with a legacy stained with prejudice and injustice?

The discovery of the “gruesome relic” is not just a pivotal plot point; it’s a symbol drenched in layers of meaning. This artifact, found in the recesses of the family home, is a tangible representation of buried truths. It serves as a jarring reminder of the weight of history, the sins of our forefathers, and the long, winding path to redemption. What does it truly mean to inherit a legacy? And can one ever separate the past from the present? The relic, in all its macabre glory, forces the characters—and by extension, the audience—to face these pressing dilemmas head-on.

Saw Clyde's here and had a great evening. Excellent comedy play and we had good orchestra seats. The seats are a bit cramped up and leg space is minimal. Apart from that we had a great show! Came back to see the Cottage play.

Just saw "The Cottage" and loooved it. Continuously funny and witty, with some outright hilarious moments. Excellent chemistry and performances by all actorsReally nice, intimate theater. Seats on the smaller side (for my knees), but great angles for viewing. I totally agree with a review that said "every seat is a good seat". Great lighting, acoustics, and clean bathrooms. I didn't get anything from the concession stand, so can't really comment (I saw Budweiser so I passed on beer).
