The musical style is a vibrant homage to the 1980s, characterized by the iconic sound of Huey Lewis and The News. Picture this: the energy of rock infused with the charm of Broadway, creating a tapestry of tunes that resonate with audiences across generations.

The Heart of Rock and Roll Musical

The storyline is a modern-day love affair with a twist of fate. It centers around two individuals in their thirties, each on a distinct path, with clear visions for their futures. However, as often happens in the labyrinth of life, their paths cross, sparking an unexpected and transformative journey. This intersection of lives is not just a meeting of hearts but also a fusion of dreams and realities. The narrative beautifully captures the essence of finding love when least expected, and how it can turn your world upside down – in the best way possible.

The musical’s universal appeal lies in its themes – love, self-discovery, and the enduring power of music. It speaks to the dreamer in all of us, the romantic, and the rock enthusiast. The show resonates particularly with those who grew up with Huey Lewis’s music, but it also reaches out to a younger crowd, introducing them to the beats that once ruled the airwaves. It’s this cross-generational appeal that makes “The Heart of Rock and Roll” a unique and captivating Broadway experience. 🎤

History and Development

The genesis of “The Heart of Rock and Roll” is as captivating as its storyline. This musical odyssey began in 2018 with its premiere at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre. Right from its inception, it was clear that this was not just a musical, but a celebration of an era – a homage to the rhythm and spirit of the 80s rock scene. The show’s initial run garnered attention for its unique blend of a heartwarming narrative and the classic hits of Huey Lewis and The News.

Following its debut, the journey to Broadway was a crescendo of anticipation and refinement. The key developments involved fine-tuning the storyline and integrating the music seamlessly into the narrative. Every step towards its Broadway debut was like adding a new verse to a beloved song, enhancing its depth and appeal. The transition from a regional theater production to a Broadway show is a testament to the universal appeal and timeless charm of the musical’s concept and execution.

Huey Lewis and The News’ contribution to the musical’s creation is akin to the soulful melody in a rock anthem. Their music doesn’t just serve as a backdrop; it’s the pulse that drives the narrative forward. The band’s iconic songs are ingeniously woven into the fabric of the story, creating a symphony that is both familiar and fresh. The musical is a tribute to their legacy, ensuring that their timeless tunes continue to resonate with audiences in a new, dynamic way.

Creative Team and Contributions

The creative maestros behind “The Heart of Rock and Roll” are a fusion of artistic vision and musical genius. At the helm as the director is Gordon Greenberg, a name synonymous with theatrical innovation. Greenberg’s directorial style is renowned for its dynamism and ability to bring stories to life in a way that captivates audiences. His expertise in bridging the gap between classic and contemporary makes him the perfect conductor for this musical journey.

The choreographic landscape of the show is crafted by Lorin Latarro, whose movements are like visual poetry on stage. Latarro’s choreography is not just about dance; it’s about storytelling through movement. Each step and spin in the show is a testament to her ability to translate the energy and emotion of rock and roll into mesmerizing physical expression.

The narrative backbone of “The Heart of Rock and Roll” is the work of Jonathan A. Abrams. His role in writing and developing the story is akin to a painter bringing a canvas to life. Abrams’ writing intertwines the vivacity of the 80s rock scene with the intricacies of modern romance, creating a script that is both heartfelt and exhilarating.

Complementing this creative tapestry is Brian Usifer, whose music supervision, arrangements, and orchestrations are the heartbeat of the show. Usifer’s musical craftsmanship ensures that each Huey Lewis hit is not just heard but felt, creating an auditory experience that is both authentic and awe-inspiring.

An absolutely lovely Broadway theater. Granted, the play was the best one I have ever seen, but the venue was stunning. The seats were comfortable, and it wasn't a super huge theater, about 1000 something seats. It was just a magical place.

Beautiful lobby. Nicely graded seating in the mezzanine. Bathrooms (clean!) on each floor. And VERY attentive ushers. This was the first show I've been to in YEARS that was cell phone usage free. And that was absolutely due to the efforts of the ushers. So nice not to be aggravated by bright screens and noises during the performance.

I was there with my family to watch Gutenberg! The musical. Before the show starts James Earl Jones asked us to put our phones away told us he was not our father, and repeated a few more of his famous tag lines. Made us all laugh. The theater is small and intimate. I don’t think there is a bad seat in the house. I would recommend anyone seeing any show here, but Gutenberg was fantastic. The original cast Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells was there and they are hilarious.

James Earl Jones Theatre was nice.Just learned in theatre he (JEJ) was voice Darth Vader- kick me, never knew.Josh Gad was one of the original 'Morman Book' actors, along with the other guy. (In Gutenberg- The Musical)I love him, he's so funny.First learned about him in, 'Wedding Ringer' with Kevin Hart. Funny!!!Gutenburg was suppose to be a play about two young guys whom spent their life savings renting a theatre, putting on a play about Printing press creator (Gutenburg). In order gain funding from potential investors. (Sen Chuck Schummer played producer- great job)Pretty funny. Just two of them all play long, little redundant second aHalf.Billy Joel music intermission, and entry.

Had the opportunity to see Guttenberg here. Beautifully renovated theater. Positives are bathrooms and bars on each level. View from seats are great too. Con the leg room and width of seats. I'm 5'7" and my knees were crushed into the railing and I became very close with the person seated next to me.

Very nice ornate theater in immaculate condition. We had seats in the balcony but yet the theater still felt close and intimate. In addition to the historically preserved main theater there is a tastefully added annex that offers modern amenities and contributed to a pleasurable evening at the theater. The staff was very helpful.

The play we watched was great but seating is tight for tall guys. I'm 6'4 and we sat up in the balcony section. My seat itself was fine but the rows are so close together that my left shin was pressing up against the seat in front of me and was really uncomfortable. I managed to take a couple playbills and fold them up and put them between my shin and the seat, this made it more comfortable but still not ideal. If you're tall perhaps book a box seat.

Recently saw Gutenberg the Musical here. View of stage from front center mezzanine is outstanding. Sound quality also very good. We had front row seats, so had a bit more leg room, but the seats are cramped and not comfortable. My husband requested a glass of water for me to take some medication and was charged $10. That’s more than a little ridiculous. Worse is that the water was undrinkable with a metallic taste and chemical smell. Of the four ushers we encountered, three were lovely. The fourth was very curt and nasty to the couple in front of us and was busy yelling at another usher. Security at the entrance was efficient and moved the line to enter quickly.

I enjoyed this theatre! I didn't feel particularly cramped and tho my seat was high in the balcony, I didn't FEEL like it was a "bad" seat. I was thrilled to get a special price of just $45 to see The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window. Incredible show.
