The Lion King is a musical adaptation of the Academy Award-winning 1994 Disney film and the 8th longest-running musical.

It was produced by Disney Theatrical Productions in 1997 and was directed by Taymor. The musical features actors in animal costumes and giant, hollow puppets.

The storyline is about a young lion prince living in the African Pride Lands. When a great tragedy, masterminded by Simba’s cunning and wicked uncle, Scar, led to the king’s death, Simba ran away from the Pride Lands, leaving everyone and everything he knew behind.

He met two hilarious and unlikely friends, Timon and Pumba, and Simba starts his life anew with them as his companion. He adjusted and got accustomed to his new life but not for so long before reality struck. The Lion King musicalWhen the weight of responsibility and a desperate plea from the now ravaged Pride Lands come to find the adult prince, Simba must restore the pride land to her usual state by taking on a formidable enemy, his uncle Scar, and fulfill his destiny to be king.

The musical has won six 1998 Tony Awards, Best Musical, Best Scenic Design (Richard Hudson), Best Costume Design (Julie Taymor), Best Lighting Design (Donald Holder), Best Choreography (Garth Fagan), and Best Direction of a Musical, which makes Taymor the first woman in theatrical history bestowed with the honor. In addition, THE LION KING has been awarded more than 70 major art awards, including the 1998 NY Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, some Grammy awards in 1999.

The musical has been in existence for more than 20 years and is still, beyond doubt, one of the best musicals to be produced. Seeing talented actors in animal costumes and giant, hollow puppets makes the show magical and exciting.

The performers and cast are all so talented and professional. You can almost imagine them as the characters in the 1994 Disney film. If you haven’t seen the musical yet, you need to see it, and it is as wonderful as the film.
