This isn’t sorcery or witchcraft; you read the headline correctly. Come 2021, a feature film adaptation of Broadway musical hit “Wicked” will be gracing theaters. The film is lined up to open on Dec 22, 2021, in an announcement made on Friday by Universal Pictures.
The musical takes another dimension in telling the story of The Wizard of Oz, as seen by the relationship between the Witches Glinda and Elphaba, known as the Wicked Witch of the West.
The musical opened on Broadway back in 2003, and for her role as Elphaba, Idina Menzel won herself a Tony Award. As it stands, Wicked is the second-highest grossing show just behind The Lion King. It surpassed the $1 billion mark back in 2016. There is no doubt that the Broadway musical, is highly popular.
Although no cast has been announced yet, there is no doubt that Fans are eagerly anticipating what’s on the horizon.
The film crew is already taking shape. Stephen Daldry will act as a director, while Winnie Holzman will serve as a screenplay writer, and Stephen Schwartz will act as composer-lyricist.
