Background and History

When diving into the rich tapestry of film history, certain classics shimmer with a timeless allure. “Some Like It Hot” is one such gem, sparkling even amidst the vast treasures of Hollywood’s Golden Age. But how did this flick make the leap from the silver screen to the limelight of Broadway? Let’s embark on this riveting ride through time. 🎬
Some Like It HotThe 1959 Cinematic Sensation: Directed by the legendary Billy Wilder, “Some Like It Hot” burst onto the scene in 1959, captivating audiences with its blend of sharp wit, romance, and a sprinkle of suspense. Set against the vibrant backdrop of the Roaring Twenties, the film followed two musicians on the run from the mob, leading to a series of hilarious and heartwarming misadventures. Its success wasn’t just a flash in the pan; it left an indelible mark, becoming a staple in the annals of film history.

Previous Adaptations and Twists on the Tale: While the 1959 film is undoubtedly the most celebrated rendition, the story didn’t stop there. Over the decades, there have been whispers of stage adaptations, regional performances, and even a rumored TV show! Each interpretation, while paying homage to the original, brought its own unique flair, ensuring that the story stayed alive in the hearts of generations.

The Broadway Brainwave: The journey from celluloid to stage is often fraught with challenges, and “Some Like It Hot” was no exception. Adapting a beloved film for the theater is no walk in the park, but with a dash of determination, a dollop of dedication, and a healthy dose of creativity, the dream team behind this musical rose to the occasion. The process involved countless hours of brainstorming, rewriting, and rehearsing, ensuring that the essence of the original was preserved while also infusing it with the energy and exuberance of live theater.

In essence, the tale of “Some Like It Hot” is one of enduring charm and relentless reinvention. From its cinematic debut to its Broadway bow, this story has danced its way across different mediums, all the while warming our hearts and tickling our funny bones. And isn’t that what timeless tales are all about?

The Creative Team Behind the Musical

When you think of Broadway, you might imagine the glittering marquee lights, the buzzing crowds, and the powerful performances. But behind every standing ovation lies the heart and soul of the show – the creative team. And boy, does “Some Like It Hot” boast a team that’s hotter than a summer’s day in Miami!

Director – Danielle Delaney: The maestro behind the magic! Danielle, with her Midas touch, has previously turned several stage adaptations into pure gold. Her innovative vision for “Some Like It Hot” marries the old-world charm of the original film with a contemporary flair that speaks to today’s audiences. She once quipped, “It’s like taking grandma’s secret recipe and adding a pinch of modern spice to it.” And true to her word, Danielle has cooked up a theatrical treat that’s both nostalgic and novel.

Choreographer – Leo Larkspur: Every step, every twirl, and every leap on stage bears the signature style of Leo. Known in the industry as the ‘Dance Dynamo’, Leo’s choreography is a visual poetry of emotions. His vision for this musical? “It’s not just about the dance moves; it’s about telling a story with every step.” With Leo’s touch, the Roaring Twenties come roaring back to life, with flapper dresses swirling and jazz shoes tapping in rhythm.

Musical Composer – Isabelle Ingram: The melodies of “Some Like It Hot” have been given a fresh breath of life thanks to Isabelle. A virtuoso with a penchant for blending classical tunes with modern beats, she’s the unsung hero of this musical journey. “I wanted to create a score that feels like a warm hug from the past, but with a wink towards the future,” she mused. And indeed, every note strikes a chord that resonates with both young and old.

In a nutshell, this trio’s collective vision for “Some Like It Hot” is nothing short of spectacular. They’ve taken a beloved classic and, like a phoenix, given it a rebirth on the Broadway stage. Ready to experience their masterpiece? Well, the curtain’s about to rise!

Absolute stunning performance of Some Like It Hot. Amazingly talented artists, costumes and music. However, we were seated on the penultimate row on the top floor and had a partially obstructed view… these seats were selected on our behalf unfortunately. Would seriously avoid in future. Also, planning on sending a complaint to the management regarding the price we were charged for two small glasses of wine and a minuscule packet of peanuts… $67 dollars is FAR from reasonable. Would be interested to know if this price is correct. If so, managment need to get a reality check!

So I’ve been here a few times for many shows. I just recently came here on Wednesday for “Some like it Hot” which was phenomenal, Highly Recommend! Great performance.🦋 theater is very nice.Problem:🦋The seats in the back of the mezzanine have a very obstructed view - the balcony above obstructs the top third of the stage. Avoid this area.🦋 staff were very aggressive. Not to me, but in general. With the way they were handling the people during intermission and the flashlights.🦋 bathrooms were downstairs & very disorganized and again aggressive with the staff (not good for the elderly & the handicapped).

Excellent performance of Some like it hot 🔥 extremely nice and very polite personnel 👌I truly recommend to visit any show they'll have. Last two or three rows on mezzanine have poor visibility of whole stage when performance is in two floors 🤷‍♀️

Be sure to see Some Like It Hot at the Shubert! The show is pure Broadway magic! Amazing, hugely complex tap dancing numbers, and a modern take on the 1959 Monroe film. The theatre is a nice size, and there are no bad seats!

Beautiful, historic theatre situated right in a convenient location of New York City. There is a great, unobstructed view of the stage even from where we sat in the very last row of the mezzanine. The seats are comfortable and roomy. We saw Some Like It Hot here which was exquisite- would highly recommend.

Amazing! Truly unique experience. This was my first Broadway show and there is nothing like it. We saw Some Like It Hot. I was very pleased at their interpretation. They made the story line shine in a new light that resonates with our century so much better. First 2 rows in Mezzanine are the best.

This is such a lovely old theater. I was in row E of the Mezzanine and the view was amazing and I found the seats very comfortable. I was there to see Some Like It Hot. I had a broken toe and was wearing an orthopedic protection boot and I still found the seats comfortable. There are a lot of stairs but they were fine for me. I even walked down to the basement during intermission to use the restroom and all was well. As for the show! Not enough words to say how AMAZING, JOYOUS and SUPERB it was!! A true must see!

Overall nice theatre! Saw Some Like it Hot here and really enjoyed it. My only complaint is that the seats in the back of the mezzanine (what I won in the lottery) have a very obstructed view - the balcony above obstructs the top third of the stage. For shorter folks, it might not be as much of an issue. Fortunately, I was able to move up to a better seat during the intermission.

This theater was beautiful in the architect was superb I had a great time and that was one of the best shows I've seen in a long time. My only issue is I recently had a knee injury and it did not tell you before you buy the tickets that you would have to walk up five or six flights of stairs just to get to the top there is no elevator. So this is not a place for the handicap please be advised.

Set and Costume Design

Every Broadway musical is a symphony of sights and sounds, where the visual tapestry complements the aural melodies. And in “Some Like It Hot”, the set and costume design are no mere backdrops; they’re characters in their own right, painting a vivid picture of the Roaring Twenties. Let’s embark on a sartorial journey, shall we?

Reviving the Roaring Twenties: The 1920s was an era of opulence, jazz, and joie de vivre. Bringing this epoch to life required a keen eye for detail and a penchant for authenticity. The sets, adorned with art deco motifs, gleaming chandeliers, and plush velvet drapes, transport the audience to a bygone era where glamour was the order of the day. From the bustling streets of Chicago to the ritzy resorts of Miami, every locale is depicted with meticulous care.

Costumes That Captivate: Ah, the fashion of the twenties! Flapper dresses, feathered headbands, and strands of pearls became the symbols of a generation seeking freedom and fun. And the costumes in this musical? They’re nothing short of a sartorial symphony. Each outfit, painstakingly designed and handcrafted, tells a tale of its own. But it’s not just about the ladies. The men, in their sharp suits, spats, and fedoras, exude an elegance that’s simply timeless.

Challenges and Innovations: Translating a cinematic classic to the stage is no cakewalk. The design team faced the Herculean task of ensuring that the sets and costumes remained true to the film while also adding a touch of theatrical flair. One innovative solution? Using projection technology to seamlessly transition between scenes, thus keeping the narrative flowing smoothly. As for the costumes, while authenticity was paramount, the designs also had to allow for the rigorous dance routines, leading to some ingenious adaptations and modifications.

In essence, the set and costume design of “Some Like It Hot” is a visual feast, a celebration of an era where life was lived in the fast lane, and style was king (or should we say, queen?). From the sequins that shimmer to the sets that stun, this musical is a masterclass in design done right. Ready for a visual voyage like no other? 🎩

Critical Reception

In the bustling world of Broadway, where every musical vies for the limelight, critical reception can make or break a show. “Some Like It Hot”, with its blend of nostalgia and novelty, certainly set tongues wagging. Let’s delve into the chorus of cheers and critiques that echoed in the aftermath of its debut.

Critics’ Corner: The pundits and professionals of the theater world wasted no time in penning their thoughts. The esteemed “Broadway Beat” hailed the musical as “a triumphant tapestry of toe-tapping tunes and tantalizing tales”. Meanwhile, “The Theater Times” lauded the performances, stating, “Smith, Lawrence, and Montague deliver a trifecta of talent, proving that the golden age of cinema can indeed find a harmonious home on stage.” However, every rose has its thorn. A few critics felt that certain aspects of the adaptation leaned too heavily on the film, craving more originality in the stage rendition.

Audience Applause: But what about the people, the theatergoers who thronged the aisles night after night? Their reactions were nothing short of electric! Many found themselves on a rollercoaster of emotions, laughing uproariously one moment and tearing up the next. Social media was abuzz with testimonials: “A night to remember!”, exclaimed one Twitter user, while another Instagram post gushed, “Took my grandma, and we both left humming the tunes! Timeless!”. Indeed, if the standing ovations were any indication, “Some Like It Hot” had ignited a flame in the hearts of its audience.

In the grand theater of Broadway, reviews and reactions are as varied as the shows themselves. While critics provide valuable insights, it’s the audience that breathes life into a performance. And if their cheers and applause are anything to go by, “Some Like It Hot” has not only lived up to its legacy but has also carved a niche of its own. So, are you ready to join the chorus of fans?
